U.S. paper-size guide
What size is half a sheet of 8.5 × 11 paper?
Split the 11-inch side of a Letter sheet into two 5.5-inch halves and each piece measures 8.5 × 5.5 inches, conventionally written as 5.5 × 8.5 inches in portrait orientation. Finished booklets still need room for printer margins, trimming, folds, and binding.
| Format | Exact dimensions | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Half Letter | 5.5 × 8.5 in · 139.7 × 215.9 mm | Exactly half the area of Letter |
| US Letter | 8.5 × 11 in · 215.9 × 279.4 mm | Two Half Letter pages fit by area |
| A5 | 5.83 × 8.27 in · 148 × 210 mm | 8.3 mm wider and 5.9 mm shorter than Half Letter |
Half Letter may appear under other menu labels, so dimensions are the reliable check. For two-up printing, start with a landscape Letter sheet and allow for the printer’s non-printable margins and any finishing trim.

Half Letter size in pixels at 72, 96, 150, 300 and 600 PPI
There is no single pixel size for Half Letter. The table uses image resolution in pixels per inch (PPI), often called DPI in paper-size searches. Printer DPI describes ink dots, not image pixels. Values are rounded to the nearest whole pixel and exclude bleed.
| Resolution | Pixel width | Pixel height | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 72 PPI | 396 px | 612 px | Screen preview |
| 96 PPI | 528 px | 816 px | Screen preview |
| 150 PPI | 825 px | 1,275 px | Draft print |
| 300 PPI | 1,650 px | 2,550 px | Quality print |
| 600 PPI | 3,300 px | 5,100 px | High-detail source |
Landscape, custom resolution and bleed
For landscape at 300 PPI, use 2550 × 1650 px. For any other resolution, calculate each side as millimeters ÷ 25.4 × PPI, then round once at the end. Use the millimeter values above rather than rounded inches.
If your printer asks for 3 mm bleed on every edge, add 6 mm to both dimensions: 145.7 × 221.9 mm, or approximately 1721 × 2621 px at 300 PPI. This is an example, not a universal bleed requirement.
Changing a low-resolution image’s PPI label alone does not add detail. A 72 or 96 PPI value also does not guarantee life-size display on a screen. Adobe explains image resolution and resampling.

Regional & printer note
Will a printer recognize Half Letter?
Half Letter is also called Statement, Mini, or Invoice in software and printer menus. PWG maps these aliases to na_invoice_5.5x8.5in; always verify the dimensions rather than relying on the label.
Always match the document size, print-driver size, paper tray, and physical sheet. A driver can silently scale a page even when the preview looks correct.
